The Beaumont Proton Center, equipped with IBA’s ProteusONE, is the 1st operational proton center in Michigan. The ProteusONE offers the most advanced pencil beam scanning (PBS) treatment technique and comprehensive image-guidance system available today. The Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) based on PBS technique allows the radiation to scan the tumor using the proton beam spot-by-spot and layer-by-layer. The adjacent critical normal structure will receive a significantly reduced radiation dose, which potentially results in less damage to healthy tissue and decreased risk of secondary malignancies. Beaumont Health has also been well-known for its technical innovation in radiation therapy in the last decades, such as 1st CBCT, Active Breathing Coordinator (ABC), and rotational x-ray therapy. In proton beam therapy, the research team at Beaumont introduced the 1st rotational spot-scanning proton arc (SPArc) therapy concept and led the technical development and clinical implementation of such technology with the partnership with IBA.

With an in-patient capacity of 1,435 beds, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital is one of Bangkok’s largest university hospitals, operating under Chulalongkorn University and Thai Red Cross Society. Our center has been planning to use proton particles since 2014, consisting of a feasibility study, technical, physical, cost-effectiveness, and personnel preparation. The Government budget of 1,200-million-baht was provided for one compact gantry, proton equipment, and new building. The construction began in 2017. This building is an underground building, located in the hospital center. The full-featured ProBeam® Compact system is installed, including a cyclotron, a 360-degree gantry from Varian. This facility has received royal grace, granting the name of the Proton Center. Due to the COVID situation, the planned first patient treatment is delaying to September 2021.HPSP will be one of the prototypes in the compact proton therapy system integrated into the hospital.

The National Cancer Center (NCC, Korea), has been at the fore front of Korea’s “War on Cancer” since being established in the year 2000. NCC Korea have engaged in not only state-of-the-art cancer treatment and research but have also made concerted efforts to improve strategies for cancer prevention and control policy. All this has been achieved through the National Cancer Control Institute (NCCI), in liaison with the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea. Having started its first proton therapy in 2007, more than 70,000 proton treatments have been performed over 14 years at NCC Korea. We also hosted PTCOG 51 in 2012 and played a pivotal role in the establishment of PTCOG-AO (PTCOG Asia-Oceania) in 2018. We are also leading a Korean Particle Therapy Research group, composed of physicists and radiation oncologists since 2019. Based on more than a decade of rich clinical experience, we are carrying out various research projects on the development of proton therapy technology and clinical research, using proton therapy in a variety of cancers including liver, pancreatic, oesophageal, lung, prostate, sarcoma, choroidal melanoma, and pediatric cancers.
